Accusing that curfew has been violated, elderly people has been brutally assaulted by the Vaddukottai Police.
While the island wide curfew has been being in effect, an elderly person has been stopped and scolded with derogatory words by the Policemen who was on duty at Siththankerni junction, when he was on his way to Siththankerni Pillaiyar temple, which is situated at the vicinity of his home today noon in order to draw potable water.
“I am a retired government servant. It is not fair to scold me with derogatory words while you are on duty with Police Uniform. You haven’t respected me even for my age”, he responded to the Policemen.
Subsequently, the angered policemen have snatched his water can which they then have broken on the street and the policemen have brutally assaulted him while scolding his with derogatory words.
Because of the brutal assault on him, the elderly man has fallen down and he has been unable for some time to get up. While he has been on street, the policemen asked him “We policemen have been standing on the streets for 3 months without water. Can’t you be able to stay at home at least for a day without water?”. Thus, the policemen has threatened him and he has been sent back to home without allowing him to draw potable water.
Meanwhile, temple administrator of Mavadi Murugamurthi temple at Vaddukottai, who went to temple to switch on the electric motor as the water tank got emptied, has also been assaulted by the Vaddukottai Police. It is noteworthy that people of Moolai, Arali and Siththankerni have been getting the drinking water from this particular temple. In the meantime, water tank got emptied today. Therefore, the people have asked the temple administrator to fill the water tank. That is why; the temple administrator has decided to go to temple to switch on the electric motor to fill the water tank. While he has been on his way to the temple, he has been assaulted by the policemen by means of batten. When the temple administrator was explaining the policemen why he was going to temple, the policemen asked him “We policemen have been standing on the streets for 3 months. Can’t the people be able to stay home without water for at least one day”. Because of the assault on him and the police has denied him access to go to temple to fill the water tank, he has returned home.
As the ones who went to get drinking water have been assaulted brutally by the policemen, tense situation was prevailing in those areas and the people have been expressing their anxiety about these incidents.
Meanwhile, a family man, who was speaking to his neighbour last Saturday, has been brutally assaulted by the Vaddukottai policemen who were under the influence of alcohol at that time. It is noted that, while the Human Rights Commission has begun its investigations on this particular incident, the elderly persons who went to get the potable water have been brutally assaulted today.
