Weerasekara castigates SL for co-sponsoring resolution

Former MP Sarath Weerasekara who spoke at the UNHRC session in Geneva said Sri Lankan leaders and not the people are cowards to co-sponsor the resolution.

He said, “This is a roll over resolution by UK and Germany. The initial one based on Darusman report which even Lord Nasby has challenged. Britain PM Theresa May said she would even change the human right laws to protect her soldiers fighting terrorism. The irony is that the same Britain is now charging our men who fought terrorism with human rights.

Mr. President, see the double standard. On one hand UK pressure to persecute our war heroes and on the other, give safe haven to Adele Balasingham, who trained the LTTE women suicide cadre. America wants our war heroes taken to ICC, but they punish the members of ICC investigating the alleged war crimes of US troops. Madlene Albrite justified starving of half a million Iraqi children to death by saying it worth the price. That’s why the general public of Sri Lanka does not take USA or UK seriously when they talk about human right violations.

UK has no moral right to talk about human right violations. When we were under British subjugation, in 1818, under Robert Brownrig’s orders, they killed all the Sinhalese aged between 18 – 35 , raped all Sinhalese women, destroyed all fruit trees, paddy fields, and reservoirs. Doctor John Davey has written that 7 % of the entire Sinhalese population was killed by British.

Lt. Mclane was infamously known for having breakfast whilst watching Sinhalese men being hung. Col Hook ordered Sinhalese to be hanged without trial.

Old practices die hard. The very nation that colonized us and destroyed our culture are on track again. We demand UK to tender a public apology for the atrocities they committed against Sinhalese and return all our precious Ola leaf books and treasures robbed from us, before trying to teach us accountability.

Germany should be reminded that Winston Churchill starved millions of Germans to death after World War 2 and it is hilarious to find that Germany, of all countries, joining hands with UK to charge us with war crimes,” he said in his address to the UNHRC.
