{"id":12166,"date":"2022-10-06T19:28:00","date_gmt":"2022-10-06T19:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/globaltamilnews.net\/english\/?p=12166"},"modified":"2022-10-06T19:28:04","modified_gmt":"2022-10-06T19:28:04","slug":"sri-lanka-rejects-resolution-adopted-at-the-51st-session-of-the-un-human-rights-council-%ef%bf%bc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globaltamilnews.net\/english\/sri-lanka-rejects-resolution-adopted-at-the-51st-session-of-the-un-human-rights-council-%ef%bf%bc\/","title":{"rendered":"Sri Lanka rejects resolution adopted at the 51st session of the UN Human Rights Council \ufffc"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sri Lanka today \u201ccategorically\u201d rejected the \u201ccountry\u2013specific\u201d resolution introduced by the Core Group at the 51st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The resolution A\/HRC\/51\/L.1\/Rev.1 entitled \u201cPromoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka\u201d was adopted by the United Nations Human Rights Council despite the call from Sri Lanka on the Members of the Council to reject it by a vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The resolution was adopted with 20 member states voting in favor and 7 states voting against while 20 member states including India abstained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sri Lanka\u2019s Foreign Affairs Minister Ali Sabry, who led the delegation to the UNHRC session, rejecting the draft Resolution HRC\/51\/L.1\/Rev.1, said the resolution was presented without Sri Lanka\u2019s consent, despite the efforts to engage with the main sponsors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile this resolution may meet the objective of advancing the political considerations of the sponsors, it is manifestly unhelpful to Sri Lanka. We call on the Members of the Council to reject it by a vote,\u201d he said in his reply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sri Lanka particularly rejected the proposal in Operative Paragraphs (OP) 8, which seeks to continue the work initiated in last year\u2019s resolution which created capacity within the Office of the High Commissioner to collect, consolidate, analyze and preserve information to support judicial and other proceedings against the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs we have repeatedly stated, this so-called external evidence gathering mechanism will have wide-ranging legal and political implications for all countries,\u201d Minister Sabry said adding that \u201cNo sovereign state can accept the superimposition of an external mechanism that runs contrary to its Constitution and which pre-judges the commitment of its domestic legal processes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Minister Sabry assured that Sri Lanka remains firmly committed to pursuing tangible progress on human rights through its domestic institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He explained that domestic mechanisms include replacing the PTA with comprehensive national security legislation, the introduction of constitutional amendments and a legal framework to strengthen democratic governance, participation and the rule of law, as well as independent institutional oversight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On reconciliation and human rights, he said the contours of a domestic truth-seeking mechanism is under advanced discussion awaiting the final report of the Presidential Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are of the firm view that any solution should be within the constitutional framework of a sovereign Sri Lanka,\u201d the Minister reiterated adding that on further engagement with this Council, Sri Lanka looks forward to domestic consultations in preparation for our upcoming UPR process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Courtesy: Colombo Page<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sri Lanka today \u201ccategorically\u201d rejected the \u201ccountry\u2013specific\u201d resolution introduced by the Core Group at&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":12167,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"content-type":"","_lmt_disableupdate":"","_lmt_disable":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-12166","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-world-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/globaltamilnews.net\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/12166","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/globaltamilnews.net\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/globaltamilnews.net\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/globaltamilnews.net\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/globaltamilnews.net\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=12166"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/globaltamilnews.net\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/12166\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":12168,"href":"https:\/\/globaltamilnews.net\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/12166\/revisions\/12168"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/globaltamilnews.net\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/12167"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/globaltamilnews.net\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=12166"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/globaltamilnews.net\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=12166"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/globaltamilnews.net\/english\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=12166"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
