{"id":1464,"date":"2017-06-23T05:35:40","date_gmt":"2017-06-23T05:35:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/globaltamilnews.net\/english\/?p=1464"},"modified":"2017-06-23T05:35:40","modified_gmt":"2017-06-23T05:35:40","slug":"new-delhi-based-hindu-maha-sabhaloktantrik-wants-indian-govt-to-support-bodu-bala-sena-and-its-prestigious-monk-gnanasara-thero","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globaltamilnews.net\/english\/new-delhi-based-hindu-maha-sabhaloktantrik-wants-indian-govt-to-support-bodu-bala-sena-and-its-prestigious-monk-gnanasara-thero\/","title":{"rendered":"New Delhi based Hindu Maha Sabha(Loktantrik) wants Indian Govt to support Bodu Bala Sena and its \u201cPrestigious Monk\u201d Gnanasara Thero"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-align: justify\">The anti-Muslim Sri Lankan Buddhist monk, Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero, General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS), has several serious cases against him relating to hate speech, blasphemy against the Quran, instigation of violence, and contempt of court.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-align: justify\">And yet, he has been evading arrest for long periods, and when arrested, has always got out on bail quickly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-align: justify\">The reason \u2013 Gnanasara Thero has supporters at the highest political levels and perhaps even in the general population.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-align: justify\">He is also operating at a time when governments, both in the South Asian region and elsewhere, tacitly support the majority community against the minorities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-align: justify\">While Hindu majoritarianism is holding sway in India under the Hindu nationalist government of Narendra Modi, the majority Sunni Muslims in Pakistan stage violent attacks against the minority Hindus, Christians and sub-sections of Muslims like the Shias and Ahmadis with impunity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-align: justify\">Neither in India nor Pakistan are perpetrators booked.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-align: justify\"><span id=\"more-53866\"><\/span>In the West, anti-Muslim feelings are allowed to be expressed freely.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-align: justify\">On Wednesday, the Colombo Fort Magistrate released Gnanasara Thera on bail in two cases, one relating to defamation of the Quran, and the other relating to an assault on the organisers of the Jathika Bala Sena media conference in 2014.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-align: justify\">BBS leader Ven Ganasara Thero subjecting a Muslim cleric to his harangue on Halal branding. Later in the afternoon, the monk was arrested by the Welikade police in another case and produced before the Colombo Additional Magistrate Buddhika Sri Ragala.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-align: justify\">The magistrate granted him bail, albeit with some hesitation given the serious nature of the charges, which were making hate speeches and instigating people to burn mosques.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-align: justify\">Earlier, the Court of Appeal had refused to order Gnanasara Thero\u2019s arrest in a contempt of court case filed by the magistrate of the Homagama Court.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-align: justify\">Instead, it gave him five weeks extra time to appear before it. The monk had failed to respond to summons three times before.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-align: justify\">Meanwhile, the monk had filed a fundamental rights petition against arrest in the Supreme Court, which is coming up for hearing on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-align: justify\">The apex court\u2019s decision on his petition is expected to indicate the Sri Lankan judiciary\u2019s overall attitude towards him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-align: justify\"><strong>Support from Buddhist hierarchy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-align: justify\">Most importantly, Gnanasara Thero has secured support from the Mahanayake of the Asgiriya Chapter, the Most Venerable Warakagoda Gnanaratana Thero.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-align: justify\">\u201cAlthough we do not approve the aggressive behaviour and speech of Bhikku Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara, the viewpoint expressed by him cannot be discarded,\u201d the Mahanayake said in a statement issued on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-align: justify\">\u201cInsulting Bhikkus by various groups without inquiring into the veracity of the issues raised by him cannot be condoned,\u201d the Mahanayake said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-align: justify\">The Kandy-based High Priest highlighted concerns about the challenges posed by internal and external conspiracies against Sinhala Buddhists and emphasised the need for the Mahanayake Theros of the Three Nikayas and the \u201cpatriotic people\u201d of the country, to act in unison to face such injustices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-align: justify\">\u201cAll other religious groups in the country should keep it in mind that Buddhists in Sri Lanka had always respected and allowed unhindered the existence of other religions.
