{"id":5828,"date":"2019-03-27T14:21:10","date_gmt":"2019-03-27T14:21:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/globaltamilnews.net\/english\/?p=5828"},"modified":"2019-03-27T14:21:10","modified_gmt":"2019-03-27T14:21:10","slug":"i-stand-fully-behind-report-on-sl-un-hr-chief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globaltamilnews.net\/english\/i-stand-fully-behind-report-on-sl-un-hr-chief\/","title":{"rendered":"I stand fully behind report on SL: UN HR chief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;line-height: 150%\">UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet said today that a newspaper article quoting a senior Sri Lankan official \u201cseriously misrepresents\u201d her discussion of the recent UN Human Rights Office report1 on Sri Lanka with a Government delegation attending the Human Rights Council in Geneva on March 20.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;line-height: 150%\">Monday\u2019s article in Sri Lanka\u2019s Daily Mirror newspaper cited a member of the Government delegation, Northern Province Governor Dr. Suren Raghaven, claiming the High Commissioner \u201cadmitted that certain facts incorporated in the UNHRC report against Sri Lanka could not be condoned whatsoever.\u201d It also said he claimed she had advised two of her senior officials who attended the meeting \u201cto be more responsible and cautious hereafter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;line-height: 150%\">\u201cNeither of these claims are true,\u201d Bachelet said. \u201cEither the newspaper misunderstood the Governor, or the Governor misunderstood \u2013 or misquoted \u2013 me.\u201d The High Commissioner said she stands fully behind the report and the oral statements she made when presenting it to the Human Rights Council, and that she believes it fairly and objectively reflects the situation in Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;line-height: 150%\">\u201cI am deeply disappointed by the spin that has been put on my discussion with the Sri Lankan Government delegation,\u201d she said, noting that other news outlets in Sri Lanka were also continuing to significantly misrepresent the Human Rights Council process in Geneva.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;line-height: 150%\">In line with normal practice, the UN Human Rights Office report \u2013 which had been requested by the 47-member-state Human Rights Council \u2013 was shared with the Sri Lankan Government in advance of its publication. The government\u2019s views were taken into account when finalizing the report, and a delegation of senior UN human rights officials discussed its contents with a wide range of Government officials during a visit to Sri Lanka in February.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;line-height: 150%\">The High Commissioner said she and her Office remained committed to assisting the Government and people of Sri Lanka to implement the Human Rights Council&#8217;s resolutions 30\/1 (2015) and 34\/1 (2017).
