Army briefs UN on reconciliation and release of land

The Army has briefed the UN on its role in the reconciliation process and moves to release more land in the North.

The Army media unit said that two Colombo-based UN delegates met Major General Mahesh Senanayake, Chief of Staff at his office in the Army Headquarters.

The UN officials extended greetings on his new appointment and received an update on the projects he carried out in the Jaffna peninsula as the Commander, Security Forces – Jaffna (SF-J) before he took office as the Chief of Staff.

Army Commander Lieutenant General Crisanthe De Silva, on a directive made by the Ministry of Defence had advised Major General Senanayake to enlighten the UN delegates on the status-quo regarding the projects that the Security Force Headquarters-Jaffna (SFHQ-J) had earlier undertaken.

The visiting UN delegates also inquired into the contribution of the Army to the ongoing reconciliation process, release of more and more lands, conservation of coastal areas, facilities that have been made available to fishing communities, etc.

Those UN delegates during the interactive meeting touched on a few other matters of interest to them including the scheduled UN deployment in Mali.
