All the major political parties that are contesting the upcoming general election on August 05 are launching campaign rallies.
The election propaganda campaign of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) began in Anuradhapura yesterday. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, founder of SLPP basil Rajapaksa and SLPP election candidates of Anuradhapura district were present at this occasion.
Later, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa participated in a rally in Kurunegala. Addressing the gathering, he said that people should elect only suitable candidates to the parliament by this general election. Former President Maithripala Sirisena and all political party leaders associated with the SLPP are expected to attend the SLPP rally.
The SLPP has also decided to organize small island wide pocket meetings at electorate level. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa is scheduled to attend each of them.
A spokesman for the SLPP told media that the public rallies of the party would be held following the health guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health.
Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has also commenced its propaganda campaign on 20th with the participation of party leader Sajith Premadasa. They had also initiated the establishment of electoral boards at the same time. The SJB is also organizing pocket meetings at electorate level and Premadasa is expected to attend all the meetings.
The United National Party too has commenced its propaganda campaign. However, the plan of holding the electoral and district level meetings has not been finalized, said Professor Ashu Marasinghe, a member of the party’s propaganda committee.
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has commenced its propaganda campaign and has organized a series of seminars at the district and electorate level.
