Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena says that he is committed to take measures to hold all future elections under the electoral system.
Speaking at the a meeting with the Sri Lanka Freedom party parliamentarians representing the North Central Province at his official residence, the President said, with the current preferential voting system, the politicians are only thinking about themselves and not about the country.
He said that under the preferential voting system politicians resort to achieve politically motivated agenda and people’s expectations cannot be fulfilled under such a system.
The President said that although some parties representing the ruling coalition within the government opposed, he considers that the measure taken by the parliament to hold the local government elections under the mixed electoral system eliminating the preferential voting is a victory for the people.
The President emphasized that all elections in the country should be held under one election system and accordingly, they are committed to holding the forthcoming provincial council election under the mixed electoral system.
The President said as promised at 2015 elections, he is committed to introduce the Divisional System instead of the preferential voting system at the next general election and will take all the necessary steps to establish the Divisional system as the method of election.
President Sirisena said he is committed to create a new political culture in the country under the new electoral system.
