Former Prime Minister and Leader of the United National Party (UNP) Ranil Wickremesinghe today requested the public to appoint a parliament that will protect the freedom of the people and strengthen the economy at the upcoming general elections.
“A parliamentary election is upcoming. Appoint a good parliament that can provide the reliefs to people, Strengthen the economy, protect this freedom,” he requested the people.
Speaking at an event organized by parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera to open the UNP office in Matara, the UNP will contest as an alliance at the upcoming election.
“This time we come as an alliance. Since 1947, the United National Party saved the country at the most difficult times. Don’t forget that,” he said.
The former Premier said that during the most difficult times in 2015 and 2016, during floods and droughts, the then government carried the economy.
He said the previous government despite being a coalition government of the country’s two main rival political parties and regardless of conflicting issues, moved forward and provided many reliefs to the public. He added that the concessions ensured by the former government for the apparel and fisheries industries must be protected.
Noting that the good governance government ensured foreign loan management during its term, the UNP leader said for the first time, a leader of this government has claimed that debts cannot be paid off and asked for a moratorium.
