Election monitor receives 1469 complaints regarding election law violations

Sri Lanka election monitoring organization, People’s Action for Free and Fair election (PAFFREL) has received 1,469 complaints of violations of election laws and other laws related to the general election by last Friday (24), according to the PAFFREL Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi.

Out of the total, 58 incidents of serious violence had been reported and 876 complaints had been received regarding illegal propaganda activities, Hettiarachchi said.

In addition, the organization says it has received 24 complaints of assaults during political activities. Among them are 9 serious assaults, six within the same party and nine disputes between the opposition parties.

Hettiarachchi also pointed out that 201 of the candidates contesting this election have violated the election laws issued by the health sector.

PAFFREL has introduced several telephone numbers to lodge complaints during the forthcoming parliamentary elections.
