The couple, who were arrested by the intelligence services on Wednesday (02) while transporting a claymore mine along with their child, had taken the bombs to carry out two attacks in the North and East, police investigations have revealed.

In a joint operation, the police and the army on Wednesday arrested the former LTTE member and her husband in Paranthan on a tip off given by the intelligence services.

The couple was apprehended while traveling in a bus from Jaffna to Kandy. The couple had hidden the bomb in a bag with rugs, police said.

The Police Headquarters said intelligence sources have revealed that this LTTE network was active in Switzerland and this is the 15th attempt by the diaspora LTTE network to launch a terrorist attack in Sri Lanka after the end of the Fourth Eelam War.

It has been revealed that the LTTE network has prepared to transport bombs to carry out claymore attacks on two targets in the North and the East.

It has now been revealed that the brother of Gopi, the LTTE cadre who was killed in an army attack in the Nedunkerni jungle on April 14, 2014, had planned the attack from Switzerland.

It has been confirmed that the arrested couple had been residing in a house opposite the house of Gopi alias Kajipan Ponnaiah Selvanayagam’s mother in Aiyakachchi, Panikkachchi.

According to information received from the couple, a hand grenade was found buried in the ground and the police and the army have launched a joint operation to find another buried explosive device.

The claymore mine found in the possession of the female ex-LTTE cadre reportedly weighed 1.8 kilograms.

She has revealed that the claymore mine was to be sent to the East and that the woman had received the bomb from a motorcyclist. She had told the security forces that the foreign LTTE network had put money in her account and that she had taken her seven year old child to this operation as a ploy to avoid suspicion.

It has also been revealed that the couple had taken a bomb to Jaffna and the Army Intelligence Unit and the Police Terrorism Investigation Unit have launched an operation to find out the target of this group.
