An Indian national named Mersalin Thomas has been arrested after he sent an SMS to the Chief Inspector of Police, Mirihana, alleging a conspiracy to assassinate President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, a senior police official has said today.
The Police official said the arrested Indian national is the same person arrested and acquitted last year for claiming of a conspiracy to assassinate the then President Maithripala Sirisena and former Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, according to local Sinhala daily Lankadeepa.
The suspect is currently detained in the Mirihana Detention Center after being convicted of staying in the country without a valid visa,
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested Thomas on 26 September 2018 based on the claims made by a police informant named Namal Kumara, who revealed the alleged assassination plot. Thomas was remanded following his arrest.
The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court on 27 February 2019 acquitted Mersalin Thomas of the charges of conspiring to assassinate the VIPs.
