State Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara says the upcoming budget is not very promising and there is no such hope in the country’s economy at present.
The Minister was responding to a query made by journalists at the end of a meeting of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Kurunegala Bala Mandala. He said he did not think the people would get much relief from the forthcoming budget, Lankadeepa reported quoting the Minister..
It is a fallacy to say that relief would be provided through budgets and that no one should expect relief from a budget,
He said that the budget is a plan to deal with the situation of the year, but unfortunately the people of Sri Lanka are accustomed to thinking that the budget will increase salaries and provide relief.
“People think the budget is like Santa Claus coming in for Christmas and it’s completely wrong,” he was quoted as saying.
He said that such a catastrophe has befallen the country today due to that misunderstanding.
Therefore, the budget is a mirror of the future of the country and the economic program for the coming year, he said, adding that some concessions as well as tax increases could be made there. He also said that it was not good to be in the mentality that ‘we did not get anything’ after the budget.
