Relief train from South to flood-hit North arrives in Kilinochchi

A special train carrying relief materials for the people in the North affected by the inclement weather has arrived in Kilinochchi today from Matara in the South.

The Train of Humanity, which started the journey yesterday afternoon from Matara arrived at the Kilinochchi Railway Station at around 2:30 pm today.

The ‘Purawesi Athwela Manushshathwaye Dumriya’ was organized by the ‘Save the Railway’ movement with the full blessings of President Maithripala Sirisena, jointly with the Presidential Secretariat and the President’s Media Unit.

The relief items collected by the Purawesi Athwela under the guidance of the Galle District Secretary were handed over to the train at the Galle station. Many private companies and the business community also partnered in this effort.

The train loaded with dry food, drinking water, school equipment, clothes, sanitary items and medicines donated for the flood -affected people of the North also stopped at Ragama, Gampaha, Veyangoda, Mirigama, Polgahawela, Kurunegala, Ganewaththa, Mahawa, Galgamuwa and Anuradhapura railways stations to collect more donations.

All the relief aids were officially handed over to the Kilinochchi District Secretary at the Kilinochchi Railway Station.
