The Leader of United National Party, former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided to appoint Deputy Leader parliamentarian Sajith Premadasa as the Leader of the Opposition in Sri Lanka parliament.
The decision was taken at the party’s parliamentary group meeting held today (05) at the UNP headquarters Sirikotha.
A group of UNP parliamentarians on two occasions have requested Speaker Karu Jayasuriya to appoint the defeated presidential candidate MP Sajith Premadasa be appointed as the Leader of the Opposition.
Since the General Secretary of UNP MP Akila Viraj Kariyawasam according to parliamentary traditions requested the Speaker to appoint the party leader as the Opposition Leader there was disagreement within the party.
Today, the party’s parliamentary group had been summoned at the party headquarters Sirikotha to arrive at a final decision.
Accordingly, it was unanimously decided to appoint Sajith Premadasa as the Leader of the Opposition at today’s parliamentary group meeting. It is due to be approved at the next Working Committee meeting.
However, Ranil Wickremesinghe will continue as the leader of the UNP.
