The Central Committee of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has decided to remove the party organizers who participated in the “We are Sri Lanka’ party convention led by SLFP patron Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga yesterday (05).

The SLFP Central Committee met yesterday at the party headquarters. It was chaired by party leader President Maithripala Sirisena.

The discussion lasted for nearly two hours and focused on the future political activities need to be taken to ensure the victory of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa at the upcoming presidential election.

The Central Committed also decided to appoint acting electoral organizers as replacements for the organizers who breached party discipline.

Following the discussion, SLFP General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara and Acting president of SLFP Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa and several others spoke out.

The convention of the Organization to Protect Sri Lanka Freedom Party was held at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium yesterday under the patronage of former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and MP Kumara Welgama.

Addressing the gathering, the former president said that the SLFP’s decision to join the SALPP was contrary to the party constitution. She said that it was not legal to sign agreements outside the party constitution.

She said there is no possibility to remove party members or organizers for attending the convention. She pointed out that according to the constitution of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, there is no acting president post.

She said that President Maithripala Sirisena’s resignation as leader of the party had also weakened the party.

Mrs Kumaratunga also promised that the SLFP would not be allowed to fall under the SLPP or the Rajapaksas and the party would be protected by defeating the SLPP candidate at the Presidential election.
