The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has decided to support Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) presidential candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s election campaign with conditions.
The SLFP will sign two Memorandums of Understanding to form a new alliance called Sri Lanka Freedom People’s Alliance, SLFP parliamentarian Nimal Siripala de Silva said today at a special media briefing in Colombo.
He said that the SLFP is firmly working on the democratic framework and national unity that prevails in the country at present. He also noted that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) is focused on protecting all district and electoral organizers and supporters.
Protecting the identity of the SLFP is a top priority, MP. Nimal Siripala de Silva said.
SLFP General Secretary MP Dayasiri Jayasekara said that the MoUs to be signed by the SLFP in support of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa will be signed within the next two days.
One agreement is to be signed between the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna. The other agreement will be signed by the SLFP with the presidential candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Jayasekara said.
The MoU with Gotabhaya Rajapaksa will be obtained as a pledge before the SLFP electoral and district organizers at a SLFP convention, the General Secretary further said.
SLFP leader, President Maithripala Sirisena has decided to stay neutral during the 2019 presidential election and will not support any candidate.
Accordingly, Prof. Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa has been appointed to cover the affairs of the SLFP until the 18th of November, SLFP General Secretary MP Jayasekara said.
As the President is the Minister in charge of the Security Forces and the Police, President Sirisena has decided not to engage in politics during the election period, MP Jayasekara said.
