Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has convened Parliament tomorrow in accordance with the old gazette issued by President Maithripala Sirisena.
Jayasuriya said that since the Supreme Court had issued a stay order on the new gazette issued by the President dissolving Parliament and calling for elections, the earlier gazette convening Parliament on November 14th will now be valid.
As a result, the Speaker’s office said that a party leader’s meeting will be held tomorrow at 8.30am following which Parliament will convene at 10am.
The Speaker said that after several days of political turmoil Parliament must now perform its role by allowing the elected representatives of the people to reach a determination on the legitimacy of their Government.
Jayasuriya also urged the public, especially persons in positions of responsibility to conduct themselves in a calm and dignified manner in order to avoid unnessercery provocation and instability.
