Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has requested all parties to not to spread misinformation on the new constitution raising false alarms to mislead the masses and create panic in the country.
The Prime Minister said currently, there is an attempt to spread racism by propagating false information on the new constitution and certain politicians meet with the chief prelates and spread false rumors that the government will bring in a new constitution that will divide the country and take away the foremost place given to Buddhism.
He urged the relevant parties not to “set fire to the country” by sowing communalism and making the new constitution a “bogeyman”.
The Prime Minister stated this joining a function held on Sunday at the Temple Trees to celebrate Thai Pongal.
The National Thai Pongal Festival organized by the Prime Minister’s office together with the National Integration, Official Languages, Social Progress and Hindu Religious Affairs Ministry was held at Temple Trees yesterday with the participation of religious leaders of all faiths and Maha Sangha.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe and Prof Maithree Wickremesinghe, TNA Leader R. Sampanthan, Ministers Mano Ganesan, Arjuna Ranatunga, Vadivel Suresh and members of diplomatic missions also participated in the occasion.
