Sri Lanka Police Chief and former Defense Secretary Hemasiri Fernando have been arrested for their failure to prevent Easter Sunday Attacks on churches and hotels despite prior knowledge of the attacks that killed more than 250 people.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara and former secretary to the Ministry of Defense Hemasiri Fernando, while they were receiving medical treatment at hospitals, the Police Media Spokesman, Ruwan Gunasekara, said.
Earlier today Fernando was admitted to the ICU of the Colombo National Hospital due to a heart attack and IGP Jayasundara was also admitted to the Police Hospital, Narahenpita.
The Attorney General Dappula de Livera yesterday again asked the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) to arrest the two top officials and produce before courts on charges including for “crimes against humanity”.
The two top officials are blamed for their failure to prevent the terrorist attacks on churches and star class hotels in Colombo and Batticaloa areas on Easter Sunday, despite receiving intelligence reports prior to the attacks.
