Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP Sumanthiran said that the party’s stance and future decisions will be taken after the presentation of the new constitution.
He was speaking to the media after the Central Working Committee meeting of Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) held Saturday in Vavuniya. The meeting was chaired by party leader Mavai Senathirajah and attended by the TNA leader R. Sampanthan with the participation of representatives of the ITAK party in the North and East.
Expressing his views further, MP Sumanthiran said the Central Committee meeting of the party was held for the first time since the election and mostly focused on the party’s setback at the general election.
“We had a lot to talk about today but we couldn’t due to lack of time. From morning till evening we discussed at length the reasons for the decrease in the number of seats for the party in this Parliamentary election.
We also discussed at length the issue regarding the appointment of the party’s national list. The Central Committee ruled that the notification to the Election Department by the Secretary without the permission of the Chairman of the party was incorrect and a decision has been taken to accept the appointment.”
“We also did not have time to discuss the new constitution today, but we will have to discuss or make decisions on it only after the new constitution is presented,” Sumanthiran said.
Commenting after the meeting, party leader Mavai Senathirajah said, “In today’s discussion, we explored the party’s setbacks in the parliamentary elections. Each commented on the cause of the party’s downfall in their areas. It has therefore been decided to investigate and submit a report on the setback in that regard. A committee for this will be set up soon.”
“In addition, we have decided to appoint a committee to take disciplinary action against members who have publicly commented on the campaign against the party and its leadership on websites and in the media during and after the election,” he added.
In addition, issues related to the political solution stated in the 2020 election manifesto, other measures, meeting the needs of the people and the holding of the National Conference will be decided at the next meeting, Senathirajah said.
