Tamils have long been opposing the Sri Lankan national flag on which lion is engraved as in way to express the Sinhala supremacy. Tamils had to start opposing the Sri Lankan national flag in order to express their fierce opposition against the ethnic oppression over them and denial of rights to them.
Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadshi (ITAK) had been opposing the Sri Lankan national flag in the past. ITAK further stressed that “Nanthi” flag should be hoisted in the functions held in the north and east instead of the Sri Lankan national flag. Subsequently, “Nanthi” flag was hoisted in some of the functions held at the north and east.
ITAK emphasized the Tamils to express their opposition to the Sri Lankan Independence Day following the Sinhala Only Act passed in 1957.
When 22-years-old Thirumalai Nadarajan was climbing on the post to pull out the hoisted Sri Lankan national flag, he was shot dead by the Sri Lankan government forces. The demise of martyr Thirumalai Nadarajan created massive pain in the hearts of Tamils in the north and east. It is the 62nd anniversary of the demise of martyr Nadarajan.
