UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged President Maithripala Sirisena to secure a long-term political settlement in Sri Lanka through constitutional reforms, the UN said.
He also encouraged the President to establish the remaining transitional justice mechanisms.
The Secretary-General and the President met in New York and discussed these issues as well as the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.
Guterres thanked Sri Lanka for its generous contribution to the United Nations Haiti Cholera Response Trust Fund.
Meanwhile according to the President’s office the President had said that the Government is committed for the initiatives taken for the development and the reconciliation and the assistance of all the countries in the world needed in this regard.
During the meeting the President invited the UN Secretary General to visit Sri Lanka to observer the current progress of Sri Lanka in the journey of achieving the development targets and the reconciliation process.
