Government is bankrupt: MP Thushara Indunil

Thought the present government promised to provide organic fertiliser free of charge to the paddy farmers during their election campaigns, the farmers now have to get fertilisers by showing their National Identity Card (NIC) to the fertiliser corporations, UNP MP Thushara Indunil Amarasena said.

Speaking at a news briefing at the Opposition Leader’s office in Colombo, the MP said President Gotabaya Rajapaksa gave thousands of promises to farmers and came to power.

“Now the farmers are facing a crisis in getting fertilisers for their crops, as there is a shortage. Today, farmers have to face a crisis in getting their free fertiliser stocks even for cash,” he said.

It was reported that fertilisers were issued by the Fertiliser Corporation in Dambulla by checking the farmers’ NICs, MP Amarasena said.

He said the present crisis reminds him of the ‘hal-polu’ days encountered between 1970 and 1976 in our country.

“It seems like this government is bankrupt,” the MP added.
