The first batch of 30 tonnes of paper produced at the recently reopened Valaichchenai Paper Mill will be released to the market on the 30th of this month, the Chairman of the National Paper Company Wimal Rupasinghe said at a media briefing held in Colombo day before yesterday.
The state-owned National Paper Company’s paper mill at Valaichchenai was opened in 1952 with German assistance and produced sufficient paper to fulfill Sri Lanka’s requirement. The factory produced about 60 metric tons of various types of paper daily.
The production was completely stopped by 1994 after the LTTE bombed the factory.
In 2015, the paper production capacity of the country became zero with the inactivation of the board making machine.
The Cabinet of Ministers in February this year approved a proposal to revive the National Paper Mills invalidating an earlier decision to liquidate the state-owned enterprise.
