Tense situation is prevailing following the fishing huts (Vaadi), boats, engines and all other things of Tamils have been set on fire at Nayaru in Mullaitivu district. 8 numbers of fishing huts, 3 fishing boats, 2 engines and 27 fishing nets were completely set on fire by the unidentified persons.
Local fisher folks have been staging protest demanding the ban on the fishing using a kind of fishing net namely “Surukkuvalai” by means of bright light beams for last 10 days. On 12th of August evening, the Minister of fisheries, who visited the scene, gave assurance that he would take actions with regard to this issue and also he has ordered the interim injunction of such fishing till that.
Meanwhile, fishermen from South, who were making attempts to catch fish making this banned fishing mode, have been halted by the local fisher folks on last Monday evening.
Subsequently, at 11 pm on the same day, fishing huts (Vaadi), boats, engines and all other things of Tamils have been set on fire. This arson attack that caused several million worth loss has created tense situation in this area.
