Fast bowler Lasith Malinga retired from One Day International (ODI) cricket today thanking former President Mahinda Rajapaksa for the support he gave which ensured he was able to play longer than expected.

Malinga also slammed his critics saying he was able to prove himself on the field.

Making a long farewell speech at the end of his last One Day International played in Colombo today, Malinga said that when he had suffered a serious injury a few years ago, Rajapaksa had introduced him to Dr. Eliyantha White who helped him recover.

Malinga said that if not for Rajapaksa and Dr. Eliyantha White he would not have been able to continue playing the game.

The fast bowler also slammed critics who attempted to push him out of the game early.

He dismissed claims that he retired from Test cricket to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for more money.

Malinga said that the only reason he retired from Test cricket was to be fit to play ODI and T-20 cricket.

Lasith Malinga said that he was not physically fit enough now to continue playing ODI games but will play T-20 cricket till he can.
