Monk remanded over statement threatening religious harmony

A Buddhist monk has been remanded for making statements that could pose a threat to religious harmony.

The Venerable Rajangane Saddharathana Thero was arrested in Anuradhapura for allegedly making statements that could disrupt religious harmony.

He was produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court and ordered to be remanded until 07 June.

The monk was reportedly arrested over a complaint made by another monk, the Venerable Pahiyangala Ananda Sagara Thero.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) had recently arrested stand-up comedian Nathasha Edirisooriya for allegedly making comments disrespectful to Buddhism.

Pastor Jerome Fernando is also being investigated for making comments disrespectful to Buddhism.
