One dead as Navy personnel fired at a car ran a checkpoint

One person was killed and another was injured when navy personnel fired at two cars that failed to heed the orders to stop at a checkpoint at Hunupitiya, Wattala and sped away.

Navy spokesman Lieutenant Commander Isuru Sooriyabandara said the shooting took place early Saturday morning when the Navy personnel attempted to check a vehicle at the Hunupitiya checkpoint.

When the driver of the vehicle has tried to run over the Navy officer who was on duty at the time at the checkpoint and flee, another officer had fired at the vehicle.

The driver of the car was wounded in the shooting and has died upon admission to the hospital. The deceased is a 34 year old resident of Wattala.

About an hour later, another car was fired at the same barricade, when it tried to flee. The driver of the car was injured in the shooting.

In both cases, preliminary investigations have revealed that both drivers were heavily drunk.
