Minister of Buddha Sasana Gamini Jayawickrama Perera said information has been received that around 1,000 Muslims countrywide have taken out newspaper advertisements changing their first names by taking Sinhala names.
He said that this sort of action whereby names are being changed had raised suspicions and noted that the country’s intelligence units will be alerted to ascertain as to the reasons which had prompted these people to resort to such actions in the first place.
The Minister said that this scenario of changing Muslim names to Sinhala had taken place only recently and that the issue had also been discussed during the Buddhist Advisory Council meeting attached to his Ministry as well.
