Parliament is likely to be dissolved on March 2 so that the general elections can be conducted by the end of April, a top government source said, Daily Mirror reported.
According to the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, the President can dissolve Parliament only after completion of four and half years of its term. Accordingly, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will be able to dissolve the House for a snap general election after March 1.
The government is keen to go for such elections as early as possible. Accordingly, a top government source told that the House would be declared dissolved by the President on March 2.
Already, the government politicians have started preliminary political work in view of the general elections.
