Eelam People’s Revolutionary Liberation Front former leader and SLPP ally Annamalai Varadaraja Perumal, commenting on the Presidential election victory of Gotabaya Rajapaksa said yesterday that: “The new President has assured a secure country for the Tamils. The people of the country elected Gotabaya Rajapaksa, as he has assured security, political stability and economic development for the country.
“I give my warmest congratulations to him, he will bring about peace in this country and among the people too. I hope he will see that everyone is equal before the law”.
Following the SLPP Presidential victory, the Daily News asked the views of several Tamil community political leaders.
Former MP and current head of the EPRLF Suresh Premachandran said, “This victory was given by the Sinhalese people, the Tamil people of this country graciously welcomes President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. We hope he could work closely with Tamil politicians to resolve the problems of the Tamil people”.
Former MP M.K.Shivajilingam and Independent Presidential candidate said the problems of the Tamils should be sorted, especially the issues faced in the North and East. Besides all this, justice should be served to those who have committed war crimes”.
ITAK head MP Mavai Senathirajah said “The people have elected this President and we appreciate and congratulate him on his win. Hope he will find a solution to the Tamil people’s problems,”.
SLPP ally and MP Douglas Devananda said: “President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s win was expected, unfortunately, the Tamil community didn’t contribute to the win. The community was misguided by the so-called Western thinking Tamil politicians and media. Even in the past when there were chances like I said before that nothing can be achieved through violence but by reconciliation and the international community cannot help us too. It is too early to say what is expected from the president as he has to settle in. This was very sad that the Tamil community didn’t take this opportunity for the better of them”.
