It is reported that the main reason for the resignation of Specialist Dr. Ananda Wijewickrema of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases from the Covid Technical Committee of the Ministry of Health is that the Covid vaccination program in Sri Lanka is not being implemented as per the recommendations of the experts.
There have been allegations that the Covid vaccination program in Sri Lanka has been carried out in the recent past disregarding the advice of experts.
Although the technical committee had recommended that Covid vaccine be given first to people over 60 years of age, steps were taken to vaccinate all people over 30 years of age first.
As a result, vaccination of a large number of high-risk individuals over the age of 60 has been delayed, which has led to an increase in Covid deaths in the country, experts say.
Specialist Dr. Ananda Wijewickrema has informed the health authorities that if the anti-Covid control programs are not implemented as per the advice of the experts, it will not be responsible for the situation that may arise in the future.
Meanwhile, it is said that Pfizer vaccination for youths between the ages of 20 and 30 in the Hambantota district has been carried out contrary to expert opinion. Specialists have suggested that 50,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine be given to children at high risk for various illnesses. However, in defiance of those instructions, 50,000 Pfizer vaccines have been sent for vaccination in the Hambantota district recently, the Neth News reported.
