45th memorial of the first martyr of Tamileelam Ponnuthurai Sivakumaran has been commemorated at Urumpirai. This commemoration has been taken place at 10
AM at the monument located at the vicinity of Urumpirai junction.
He was engaged in armed struggle against the oppression imposed on Tamils through standardization of education and for the right of Tamils.
Consequently, the Sri Lankan police was in search of him. He sacrificed his life by consuming cyanide when he was being rounded up by the police on 05th of June, 1974.
