Sri Lanka PM directs immediate relief to flood affected in North, appeals to private sector to assist

Sri Lanka Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has directed relevant officials and institutions to provide all the necessary relief for the people affected by the floods in Northern Province districts including Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi and Mannar.

The Prime Minister has instructed the Minister of Public Administration and Disaster Management Ranjith Madduma Bandara to coordinate with the parliamentarians of the affected districts and expedite relief efforts.

The Prime Minister has instructed Minister of Finance and Mass Media Mangala Samaraweera to release necessary funds. The Finance Ministry will immediately commence compensation for those affected, the Premier said.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe has already named a group led by Minister of Public Administration and Disaster Management Ranjith Madduma Bandara to provide relief to flood victims.

The Minister yesterday visited the flood affected areas in the Northern Province and presented a special report to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on the flood situation.

The Prime Minister also appealed to the private sector to assist in providing relief wherever possible.

According to the latest update from the Disaster management Center on the flood situation 86,531 people from 27,625 families have been affected in the five districts of the Northern Province while 10,306 people from 3,245 families have been displaced and housed in 28 shelters.

According to the Disaster Management Center the floods in the North are gradually receding and the number of shelters is decreasing as people have started to go back. However, the relief for the displaced persons will continue to be provided.
