The United States (US) has issued a security alert for Sri Lanka over May Day rallies set to be staged in the country.
The security alert notes that between 1-7 May, the U.S. Embassy in Colombo expects various groups and political parties will hold parades and rallies in conjunction with the annual Labor Day holiday.
Known locations include, but are not limited to, Colombo, Jaffna, Galle, and Batticaloa.
“We expect these gatherings to be peaceful but people should anticipate road closures and disruptions to traffic throughout this period,” the Embassy said.
The Embassy reminded US citizens that even peaceful demonstrations can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.
“You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations. Avoid the areas of the demonstrations. Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests. Monitor local media for updates. Keep a low profile,” the Embassy added.
